We regularly assist clients in areas unique to local government and local government relations, such as zoning, land use, public bidding, construction, utilities, and lobbying.
Through its relationship with the State Capital Group, the Group’s attorneys have strong ties with lobbyists in the fifty state capitals, several large commercial cities, and foreign countries around the world. The Group also has a relationship with a top Washington D.C. law firm which can be called upon for assistance with federal issues, should the need arise. Member firms of the State Capital Group practice independently and are not in a relationship for the joint practice of law.
In our legislative representation, we have represented a number of clients over the years that have established political action committees (PACs). We have advised them extensively on raising funds for political campaigns and making contributions to specific candidates. We routinely attend various fundraisers and campaign functions on behalf of clients. In addition, we spend considerable time and effort to remain knowledgeable and up to date on North Carolinas political landscape, including the status of campaigns for the General Assembly and statewide executive and judicial races.
Over the years, we have represented a number of different clients on a multitude of different issues that cut across the ideological spectrum. As a result, we have had the opportunity to work with liberals and conservatives, Republicans and Democrats, easterners and westerners, and politicians of all stripes. We have developed good relationships with most members of the General Assembly and with leadership.
Our attorneys also represent local governments in cable franchise renewals, and regulation of telecommunications, cable and utility companies that maintain facilities in municipal street rights-of-ways. This work includes negotiation of encroachment agreements and preparation of rights-of-way ordinances. Our attorneys have also represented several municipalities regarding uses of municipally-owned communications facilities.
