Poyner Spruill Welcomes Education Law Practice Group

Poyner Spruill LLP is pleased to announce that Brian Shaw received the Ann L. Majestic Distinguished Service Award during the North Carolina Bar Association Education Law Section’s annual meeting. A seasoned partner and adjunct professor at Campbell University’s Norman A. Wiggins School of Law, Shaw has served more than 50 North Carolina public school Boards of Education and several charter and private schools.

Shaw has almost 40 years of experience providing general counsel to school systems. He frequently speaks at various education attorney professional organizations, including the NC Bar Association, the NC Council of School Attorneys, the National Council of School Attorneys, and the North Carolina School Boards Association.

“We are proud of Brian for earning this well-deserved honor,” Managing Partner Dan Cahill said. “Brian mentors other attorneys, provides accurate and sound legal advice to clients, and offers his wisdom and insight on education case law developments several times a year.”

Shaw joined Poyner Spruill in 2021, when he led the transition of nine education law attorneys from Schwartz & Shaw. Poyner Spruill has helped the firm’s first Education Law Practice Group thrive by focusing on providing excellent service to existing clients and adding several new Board of Education clients.

Shaw earned his undergraduate degree from Harvard College, graduating with cum laude honors. He obtained his Juris Doctor from the Harvard School of Law. He previously served as the Chairman of the Education Law Section of the North Carolina Bar Association. And on the Board of Directors for the National School Boards Association Council of School Attorneys.

Two other Poyner Spruill partners were honored with the Ann L. Majestic Service Award—Eddie Speas in 1990 and Laura Crumpler in 2016. Each year, the award is given to an attorney who displays great professional, community, and personal achievement in the field of Education Law.
