Obituary of Howard Chalk Broughton
Southern Pines, North Carolina | August 30, 2017

Surrounded by his family, Howard Chalk Broughton died peacefully on Wednesday, August 30, 2017.

Howard was the youngest son of Harry Trueman Broughton and Julia Chalk Broughton and was born in Hertford, North Carolina, on May 24, 1930. He attended Perquimans County Schools and was a graduate of Perquimans High School. He attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration in 1952. Howard then enlisted in the United States Army and served three years. Following his military service, he attended the University of North Carolina School of Law, from which he graduated in 1958. Shortly afterward, he began his 58-year law practice in Moore County, continuing until his retirement in 2016.

A devout Episcopalian, Howard was an active member of Emmanuel Episcopal Church, serving as both junior and senior wardens of the vestry, lay reader, chalice bearer, usher, and on rector search committees. Howard was active in the Episcopal Diocese of North Carolina as a long-time convention delegate and member of various diocesan committees. For more than 20 years, he was a lay reader at Penick Village’s Tuesday morning prayer service. During his years in Southern Pines, he served as a leader with numerous organizations including serving as one of the founders of the ARC of Moore County and Pinetree Community Services. He also served on the board of the UNC School of Law Alumni Association and the North Carolina Symphony. And Howard rarely missed his weekly lunch meeting with the Kiwanis Club of the Sandhills.

Howard was preceded in death by his parents Harry Trueman Broughton and Julia Chalk Broughton, his brother Harry Trueman Broughton, Jr., and his sisters Julia Broughton Rivet and Margaret Broughton Dale.

He is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Penelope Dana Broughton, and his children Howard Chalk Broughton, Jr., and his wife, Kara; Paul Dana Broughton and his wife, Holley; Julia Crocker Broughton; and David Popham Broughton and wife, Charlotte. Howard is also survived by ten treasured grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, September 16, at 2 p.m. at Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Southern Pines (350 East Massachusetts Avenue), with a reception to follow in the parish hall. A private interment will be held prior to the service.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Southern Pines or to the University of North Carolina School of Law for the Howard C. and Penelope D. Broughton Family Scholarship Fund (Campus Box 3382, Chapel Hill, NC 27599).
